Snowden
was motivated by a belief that publics could
get beyond this simplistic and false view of
privacy: “If
you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.”
Here's a great talk by Glen Greenwald arguing against this way of looking at privacy.
The Day We Fight Back

The concept of internet surveillance and privacies, admittedly, is a subject I had not previously tapped into. Upon seeing this film about Snowden, I found myself truly intrigued, concerned, and shocked at the truth of the affair. One does not expect to see the government so blatantly lying to its people. If I were Snowden, perhaps I would not have done what he did, but I must say I find his actions admirable. He went to great lengths to expose the truth and follow the values supposedly put forth by the US that the people should be able to discuss and debate national decisions.
ReplyDeleteIn this article, https://www.wired.com/2016/11/despite-trump-fears-snowden-sees-hopeful-future/ , Snowden talks about the theoretical power of Trump before his inauguration and discusses the extreme necessity of having freedom online. The funny, and ironic, part of the article is where Russia comes into the conversation. Snowden believes that with Trump, Russia relations would de-escalate. Ironically, things have gone the exact opposite way.
